I consume a few news aggregators throughout the week and more often than not, I have the urge to get someone else's take on current happenings to gain some variety in perspective. Mostly I come away with more questions than answers. So for the selected articles, I endeavor to put forth good quality and reasonable questions. Comments are welcome.
Inflation, recession, stagflation, global mandate hangover, etc. Whatever it is, it doing a number on real wealth. When less than half of US adults can swing a $400 emergency expense there is an underlying tension and anxiety. What do you see as evidence of this? Does the behavior of our institutions influence the behavior of our citizens, as in printing money, leveraging credit, and growing transfer payments? Link
War, for the protection of a nation is good and just. If you are on the winning side, war has been generally good for the economy. For BAE, NG, R, GD, B, and many others, win or lose and for any reason, war is good. I have never invested based on global conflict, but the BAE article gives me a case of the FOMO's. Best quote is from BAE CEO, "acknowledges the profits are directly related to global destabilization and Western foreign policies, particularly those of London and Washington, aimed at Russia and China". The lowering/eliminating the promotion standards for any employer is fraught with bad juju. As one of the largest US employers, the Navy stands to damage its own brand and splash the rest of us with a culture of mediocrity. Any employer lowering its standards to fix a "retention" problem is creating a recruitment problem. Maybe they should focus on other issues causing people to leave. Link
US electric utilities reported to the GAO that a Large Power Transformer can cost as much as $10M, not including the cost of transport and installation to its place on the grid. Cost plus a 5-year backlog on the specialty steel required to construct transformers is the reason GAO recommended utilities have plans for dealing with this risk over 5 years ago. Do you think there are competing priorities that could make this a real issue? Link
